I've put together a list of seven terrifyingly good horror movies and wine pairings for you to savor during your spooktacular week. Don't forget to share your favorite pairings with us in the comments below. Let the hauntingly delightful festivities begin!
1. Hocus Pocus and Bubbly
There's something enchanting about popping a bottle of bubbly while watching a childhood favorite. Like the wine, this beloved Disney classic will keep your spirits high all night. Did you know that "Hocus Pocus" actually started as a bedtime story? This lighthearted tale is loosely based on the Salem Witch Trials, though the names and dates are fictional.
2. Scream and Cabernet Sauvignon
"Scream" is a terrifying Halloween classic that pairs excellently with a bold, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. It might surprise you to know that "Scream" drew inspiration from the real-life Gainesville Ripper, a gruesome murderer. Screenwriter Kevin Williamson had an incredible burst of inspiration, writing the entire movie in under three days!
3. Nightmare on Elm Street and Merlot
"Nightmare on Elm Street" calls for a plump, sensual wine, well-known for its red fruity flavors – Merlot is the ideal choice for this movie. Did you know that this film marked Johnny Depp's debut in the world of acting? It's safe to say he probably enjoys a good Merlot.
4. The Shining and Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir grapes thrive in colder climates, making them the perfect match for the icy, desolate hotel in "The Shining." Fun fact: Jack Nicholson improvised his infamous line, "Heree's Johnny!"
5. Friday the 13th and Malbec
This bold horror film deserves a bold, full-bodied wine with dark fruit notes – you won't forget it. Malbec is the perfect choice! Did you know that "Jason" from the movie is actually considered the most prolific horror movie killer of all time? The notorious hockey mask didn't make its appearance until the third movie.
IT and Syrah
This intense and daring flick demands a bold, dark wine to accompany it. The rich flavors of Syrah make it a frighteningly good pairing. Did you know that Pennywise the clown isn't really a clown at all? Stephen King gave this "Interdimensional cosmic entity" a clown facade because kids are drawn to clowns. Creepy, right?
7. Casper and Rosé
This fun, family-friendly Halloween classic pairs perfectly with a light, crisp Rosé. Fun fact: Casper the Friendly Ghost dates all the way back to 1939, with the character's debut appearance in a children's book in the late 1930s.
